Whistler Pioneer Photographs from the Myrtle Philip Collection
In October 2000 the multimedia firm Pepper Sunlight Productions
successfully competed for a CDC contract to hire four young people
to digitize a historical photo collection from the Whistler Museum
and Archives.
In the process they built a sophisticated and well designed educational
web product that tells the story of Myrtle Philip, a renowned
and respected founding pioneer of the Whistler, British Columbia,
resort municipality. Archival research in an idyllic mountain
and nature setting? Yes! And thanks to the World Wide Web, no
airfare is required!
This Web site provides a fascinating glimpse into the lifestyle
and values of a Canadian nature lover and resort owner of the
early twentieth century.
In 1914 Myrtle Philip and her husband Alexander Philip opened
Rainbow Lodge on Alta Lake, BC. A former school teacher, Myrtle
set to work cooking and running the fishing resort for the tourists
and sportspeople that were drawn to the pristine setting. She
became a driving force in the community, succeeding in establishing
a post office, a community club, and a school for what was then
a remote village that had only just been made accessible by the
Pacific Great Eastern Railway. This site documents the summers
and winters, both past and present of this vacation resort, introducing
the Web visitor to the friendly characters and activities of the
Philip's resort, where, in bygone days, a week's stay would only
cost $20.00! In addition, the Photo album reflects themes of the
Web site, such as the history of the lodge, the family and friends,
the way of life, and recreational activities such as boating,
fishing, hiking, swimming, horseback riding, etc. This site will
be of interest to teachers and students, tourists, historians,
and the general public.
